Hate, Bigotry, Projection, and The Sixth Sense
In the movie The Sixth Sense with Bruce Willis, the kid can see dead people. But the dead people don’t realize they are dead, they think they are still alive and living a normal life. To me, this is an analogy for bigotry. How? I’ll get to that. Let’s take an example from Dennis Prager:
It is the proponents of same-sex marriage who express nearly all the hate -- because in fact many of them do hate, loudly and continuously. But hate in the name of love has a long pedigree. Why should our generation be different?
Prager of course opposes same-sex marriage and supports the Proposition 8 in California. If the proposition passes, gays there won’t be allowed to marry. But in the mind of a bigot like Prager, he isn’t a bigot. In fact, he accuses the opposition to Proposition 8 of having the hate. In a sense, he is right, but not in the way you think. There are two types of hate, good hate and bad hate. Good hate is defensive against something that could do harm against you. Bad hate is offensive and unreasonable. Good hate is the hate blacks use against the KKK and bad hate is the hate the KKK uses against blacks. Good hate is the hate of bad hate. But in the mind of people like Prager, proponents of same-sex marriage are the ones with the bad hate when it is people like Prager who are hateful*.
Also to bigots like Prager, they don’t see themselves as bigots, they see themselves as good. When blacks were enslaved and later segregated, the racist whites doing it saw themselves as moral people. When women were oppressed, sexist males thought they were doing the right thing. And now the people who oppose same-sex marriage don’t see themselves as homophobic, but as champions of god and "family values." Like the dead people in The Sixth Sense, the bigots don’t see themselves as bigots, but as moral, decent people. It’s up to us to remind them they are bigots and ignore their attempts at projection. Cause like ghosts, some bigots like to wear white sheets**.

* For future references, terms like "hateful", "hatred", and the noun form of "hate" will refer to bad hate to avoid confusion unless stated otherwise.

one comment:
i get so sick of hearing the word ‘homophobe’ i wanna puke. anytime someone with the least bit of distain for the homosexual lifestyle expresses it, they are labeled a ‘bigot’ or a ‘homophobe’... BULLCRAP!
i have NO hatred for homosexuals, but have a grave distain for their sikening lifestyle… which is thrust upon me without MY consent.
btw, I wanna marry my dog/other pet/small child… is this OK as well??? after all, it’s ‘just another form of love’ :slap:
