Snakes on the Glades
Reading this makes me cringe, not cause I'm afraid of snakes, but because I'm an environmentalist.
The population of Burmese pythons in Florida's Everglades may have grown to as many as 150,000 as the non-native snakes make a home and breed in the fragile wetlands, officials said Thursday.
Holy shit, 150,000? Either the snakes reproduce very quickly or there must be a lot of irresponsible pet owners out there. Not only will these Pythons compete against other native snakes for resources, but other predators such as Alligators and Mark Foley. I can't imagine seeing one of these in the wild, the largest native snake is under 10 feet long, these things are huge!
But as a larger issue, humans need to realize what the fuck we are doing to our environment so we don't have to keep cleaning up after ourselves.
